ABOUT AZUL
Drawing inspiration from the “Blue city” in the Rif Mountains of Morocco Chefchaouen, the word ‘Azul’ means blue in Spanish, and is believed to have an Arabic origin deriving from the valuable blue stone, lapis lazuli.
Chefchaouen, often referred to as the "Blue Medina,", is renowned for its characteristic blue-painted buildings. A tradition dating back to the 15th century when Jewish refugees settled in the town. Blue is considered a symbol of spirituality and divinity in Judaism, and the residents began painting their homes blue to reflect this.
THE PHILOSOPHY
Beyond aesthetics, blue has symbolic significance in Moroccan culture. It can represent a variety of concepts, including spirituality, protection from the "evil eye," and the vastness of the sky and sea.
